2PMathon Update: Week Two

Here we are in week two, and I feel slightly accomplished, yet also feel like I’m completely failing. In exciting and happy news I finished Dream High! I did it! It was so hard, but I’m done and we can check it off the list. I’ve been making progress on Shall We Fall in Love as well. I’m currently on episode 18. I’ve been trying to make a push to get that one done, but then put it aside to finish up Dream High. I sadly haven’t been able to start any other dramas for the challenge like I wanted to have done this week. Dream High took a lot out of me, I’m sorry.

Dream High

I tried to look for Young K in the dancing scene and it was hard to see him, so you all should just watch the Real 2PM episode that you can see him more clearly around the two minute mark:

You can also see a baby Shownu.

Great moments were finally seeing other members in cameos. Really, the highlight of these episodes.

So…the drama wasn’t good. I didn’t expect it to be, and I didn’t expect it to be a drama that I was going to like. It wasn’t written for me, and that’s fine. But going in I really thought it would just be that I didn’t like the drama in a base neutral way. It was going to take a lot for me to continue on (I really, really don’t like powering through things I’m not enjoying), but I didn’t think there would be actual rage.

Yes, I’m talking about IU’s character.

While the drama makes slight changes towards the end of the series to correct itself, this plot was just so horrible and terrible. I hated every bit of it but this part, right here, is what just really made me not want to continue. I almost dropped the drama.

It just never fully made up for it’s errors, and it really made watching what was (eventually) a really cute couple not the best experience it could have been. I had to just laugh at JYP’s character who is defending her being overweight when I know for a fact he and his company don’t subscribe to that. This isn’t new sadly, absolutely no one does justice to representation of overweight characters, and they are always given a pass for the terrible and damaging journeys they take and while it saddens me every time to say it, I expected it all.

I will say that one of the saving characters in this was Hye Mi. For her coming in as the ‘most judgemental’ of the group, she never once cared about Pil Sook’s weight and genuinely acknowledged her talent. If there is a glimpse of redemption in the weight plot, it’s this. I also really enjoyed some of their shared moments together. If there was one solid relationship in this drama that I enjoyed watching the development of, they were it.

Nothing really makes sense in the drama, and things jump around weirdly. A lot. But I finished it and that’s all that matters.

Shall We Fall in Love

I’m not necessarily enjoying this drama. But while Dream High was a true hate watch, this one is just not my type of drama. I don’t have much to talk about, the plot is a little bit slower and lighter because it can be. It has 35 episodes to go through.

I still like Fei’s character in this, even though we’ve gotten to the spot where her character is switching to be a bit meaner. She still is a little more grounded than a lot of character’s in her position are played up in this type of drama, so it’s not the end of the world. Would it have been great if she just kept being more neutral and just generally annoyed with Xinyue’s character? Yes. But we knew it wouldn’t go that way. I also really like the…female main boss character. MDL doesn’t have her name, I don’t necessarily know exactly her title. I’m sorry. I kind of love how they are playing with her being good enough to help Dingfei since she’s the CEO’s father, but also do it reasonably? It’s hard to explain. I respect that she is also always thinking of the company and only lets outside factors influence her to a point. In the end, she wants the business to keep growing and isn’t afraid to put Hao Yu in his place just because of who he’s dating. It’s a nice balancing game she’s doing.

At this point Xinyue’s character is now expected to leave the end of her contract, and she’s done that “shy girl gets even by a makeover” thing that dramas love to do. I hate it, by the way, and it took more than a couple of episodes for the drama to actually explain why she’s doing it. But of course, not before Nichkhun’s character who at this point has shown that doesn’t matter, ogles her new look and it get’s her in a sticky situation with a pervy boss where the boys have to come rescue her. It’s exhausting, and such an overused plot.

too close sir you have a girlfriend.png

Now she’s going after her ex who is the actual worst and completely ignoring Nichkhun’s character who has been nothing but nice and actually done nothing and it’s all just blah. I may not hate this drama, but it makes me sad to know I have 18 more episodes of it to sit through.

Check back next week when I will hopefully have progressed more and picked up dramas I actually enjoy!
