August TBR/W

tbrw aug.jpg

Things have been a little crazy this past week or two and I haven’t actually had a lot of time to sit down and really figure out my TBR/W for the month, so this month I will just stick to written form and forgo doing a video as well.

+ the books +

I have decided to participate (or try to participate) in one readathon this month: the Mythathon. There are a number of ways to do this readathon, but the most appealing part of it was that it’s for the entire month. I probably won’t be able to pick up a book till at least next week, so this really is the perfect readathon for me to be doing right now. You can find the announcement video here. I will be on Oya Team Air headed by The Novel Lush.

These are the challenges:

  1. Oya is the Orisha of wind and storms - read a book that takes place under hostile weather conditions: Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

  2. Oya is the Goddess of Death and Renewal - read a book where a character must reinvent themselves: Rebel Seoul by Axie Oh. This is going to be combined with the Certified Noonas Book Club pick.

  3. Oya is of the Yoruba tribe where women do not hunt - but she became a fierce warrior anyway. Read a book about an unconventional woman: Trail of Lightning by Rebecca Roanhorse

  4. Oya has 9 children and her lucky number is 9 - read a book with a number in the title: A Thousand Beginnings and Endings edited by Ellen Oh

  5. Group Book: The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by N. K. Jemisin

+ the dramas +

I have a couple of stragglers left over that are still currently airing that I’m still watching. I won’t put the ones that I’ve let fallen that I’m probably going to marathon at strange times. Here are my top returning ones:

There aren’t a crazy amount of new dramas this month, but there are a few that I will be trying to track down and find time to at least watch and feel out if I want to keep them or keep them in mind for a later time.

August 5 I Wanna Hear Your Song-너의 노래를 들려줘 // KBS2 (Viki)

I honestly am only interested in this one because I just don’t know what it’s suppossed to be. I thought it was going to be lighthearted, but it’s a thriller?

August 8 The Naked Director-全裸監督 // Netflix

This one, while probably not something I would go for, is a show that I’m going to try out because I just want to support more jdramas on the bigger stations. It’s Netflix produced, so I’m assuming that all the episodes will be released at once.

August 9 Be Melodramatic-멜로가 체질 // jTBC (Viki)

This was actually on my list for last month, and it got pushed back to this month. Still really interested in it. I enjoy these types of dramas so I’m hopeful that this one will be a good one to have on rotation.

August 31 Hell is Other People-타인은 지옥이다 // OCN (No word on subs)

Im Siwan. Lee Dong Wook. Dark and creepy. OCN. Did we expect me not try this one out?

tbr/w: july + koreadathon

tbr/w: july + koreadathon

I can’t believe that it is already the end of the month. This month flew by fast and I’m not really prepared for it.

This month is going to be slightly crazy, as it’s my last month off contract and I will be trying to get everything I possibly can done during the days when I have the most amount of free time. I’m also participating in two different readathons, and the amount of shows premiering this month is slightly insane.

Watch List of Doom

CURRENTLY WATCHING.jpg

It’s the beginning of November, and seeing as how I haven’t done a currently watching post since this summer, an update felt needed.

To be honest, I am a bit behind on some of the airing shows. Between the demise of DramaFever (and subsequent discussions on twitter), the start of the new podcast I’m in (Certified Noonas, check us out!), and getting sick (to the point that I couldn’t even watch anything), I’ve been playing major catch up. I sadly have to spend most of my day at work so it’s been slow, but this past week I made a huge dent and I’m sure I’ll be caught up by the end of this week.

-CURRENTLY AIRING-

Where Stars Land - 여우각시별

Despite this past weeks direction into a territory I don’t want, and the fact that everyone seems to hate this drama, I am really enjoying it. Is it perfect? Absolutely not, but it’s a fluffy pretty drama with actors I like and hidden moments that I am really enjoying. I might do a full review on this one once the show is completed, because I have a lot to say on it.

The Beauty Inside - 뷰티 인사이드

This is the surprise drama for me. It has taken my heart. I was not in the mood to watch this when it first aired, and figured with the plot that it would be an okay show but not something I would fall in love with. I was wrong. The characters relationship’s are fantastic, and I’m in love with the moments they are taking with the two leads just enjoying each other’s company. Episode 10 had me tearing up; it was a beautiful episode.

The Smile Has Left Your Eyes - 하늘에서 내리는 일억개의 별

This show is so good. It is by far my favorite of the group. The writing is fantastic, the acting outstanding. I am intrigued and it’s always leaving me wondering what is going on and why. The whole tone of the show is fantastic. I’ve been really good and haven’t spoiled myself from the jdrama version, because I am loving the feeling of being on the edge of my seat every week.

Terius Behind Me - 내 뒤에 테리우스

I have no clue what is going on with this show. It isn’t a good show. At all. It doesn’t know what it wants to be and changes every single episode but I find myself not being able to look away. I’m more intrigued by it’s existence than anything else.

The Player - 플레이어

I’m fairly far behind on this show and it ends next week, but it’s still on the list because I really loved it and have every intention on catching up (maybe before the finale? A girl can dream). The cast has some killer chemistry and they are having fun which shows. And Krystal. I liked her before, and now have a crush on her.

Ms Ma, Nemesis - 미스 마, 복수의 여신

This best way to describe this show is a great weekend afternoon watch. I’m not an Agatha Christie fan so I don’t know how closely it is following to the Miss Marple stories, but I am a mystery/crime fan and this one is fun.

Twelve Nights - 열두밤

I started this drama purely because we wanted to discuss it on the podcast and liked it much more than I thought. I probably wouldn’t have even picked it up if I didn’t have to talk about it, but it’s a nice quiet show.

-EVERYTHING ELSE-

100 Days Prince - 백일의 낭군님

I’m really not a sageuk fan, so I tend to not even attempt any of the ones that air, but too many people were talking about this one, and I’m definitely one to be moved by peer pressure. I ended up marathoning a ton of episodes one weekend…and then DramaFever was killed. I haven’t really picked it up again, and I fear it might end up in that “on hold” hole that I like to put things that I know the ending to but hope that I can watch it.

Love Myself or You/Pleasantly Surprised - 喜歡·一個人

I feel like I always want to have one non-Korean drama on my watch list, and this one came on because of that. And Jasper Liu’s smile. He has a very nice smile. It’s been sort of sidelined - have you seen that airing watch list I have accumulated? I still pick up an episode here and there and need to finish it soon.

Sassy Go Go/Cheer Up - 발칙하게 고고

This was also a show that I picked up before this crazy round of shows, and now that Ghost Detective is done I’ve moved it back to the watch list in hopes to get me to watch it again. I’m about half way through the series, but it is a high school drama and I just have to be in the mood to watch it.

I also watch my same variety/reality shows pretty much weekly: Running Man, Home Alone, and Happy Together.

I try to be fairly good about updating My Drama List, so if you find you really want to check out what I’m watching, that’s a good spot.

Currently Watching - May '18

CURRENTLYWATCHING.png

As I said in my last post, I’m currently watching the most amount of dramas/variety shows at once than I ever have (thanks to being off-contract at work and no money coming in for me to actually live a social life) so I figured I would talk about them. Note: this list does not include the shows I have started and have no want to continue watching them.

This part is all about the dramas!

Quiz From God (Season 4) - 신의 퀴즈
I loved the first two seasons of this show: the amount of stronger females in the top leadership positions, the cross between Bones/Castle, a crime procedural: love. I had started this a very long time ago, and told myself that this summer was the summer that I was going to finish it…and then season three happened. I am about 6 episodes into the fourth and last season and even getting to look at Dong-hae isn’t helping it.

Black - 블랙
I have an off and on relationship with this show, it has it’s moments where it is really awesome and I liked the journey it was taking me on, but there are just too many moments where it was lagging to the point that I haven’t picked it up in a while. I am strongly leaning towards Go Ara’s character being the reason, whether it be the way it’s written or the way she is acting, its just too much. But Kim Tae-woo is incredible and I love every part he’s in.

Sketch - 스케치
This is currently airing, and is the only reason it’s stopping me from marathoning it. It’s a crime procedural with an sci-fi element starring Rain. What more could I ask for? Maybe a lead girl with the “gift” who doesn’t get herself in trouble so that the cute boy will save her but for a moral objective? Yes please!

Live - 라이브
Another crime show…and I am now realizing that there is a current pattern in my watch list. This is a first for me, because even though I love a crime procedural (the only American shows I watch are those: Criminal Minds, NCIS, CSI…) I usually go for the romance dramas. This one is fun because it’s a look into the Korean police force that I have no knowledge of.

Miss Panda and Mr Hedgehog - 판다양과 고슴도치
I confess, I like Dong-hae. It’s cute, but not the best so it’s my when I’m bored show.

Miss Hammurabi - 미스함무라비
Honestly, I might give up on this series. I started to like it, but I’m starting to really not like Go Ara’s character. It’s a little too unlikeable for someone who is supposed to be the moral character. I understand that I haven’t watched enough to really solidify my opinion, but I have no want to pick it up now, but I’ll keep it up to let the queue of eps fill up (maybe I don’t like Go Ara?)

Come and Hug Me - 이리와 안아줘
It is surprising how good this show is. It’s 100% a show I would marathon if it wasn’t currently airing.

Flower Boy Next Door - 이웃집 꽃미남
I randomly started this show and then five episodes passed and here we are.

Neon Genesis Evangelion (anime) - 新世紀エヴァンゲリオン
This is a rewatch of the series, but on my old blog I had thought it would be fun to do a rewatch of it since it’s been such a long time since I’ve watched it and I had this grand idea of writing about it, but that hasn’t happened. But I’m still watching it randomly.

Violet Evergarden (anime) - ヴァイオレット・エヴァーガーデン
I don’t watch anime much any more, but it’s so easy to watch them nowadays that I dabble every once in a while. Netflix suggested this, and it’s really beautiful and I found it interesting.

Love Affairs in the Afternoon - 昼顔 - 平日午後3時の恋人たち
Currently the only J-drama I’m watching. It’s good, but I dropped it a while ago but do plan to finish it. I’ll probably end up doing it when I’ve caught up with the rest of this list.

I will try to keep the Currently Watching page up to date, so check there for the most recent list

Currently Watching - Variety/Reality Shows

I am currently watching the most amount of dramas/variety shows at once than I ever have (thanks to being off-contract at work and no money coming in for me to actually live a social life) so I figured I would talk about them. Since this is probably going to be a long post as it’s the first one I’ll break it up into two parts.

currently-variety.png

Let’s talk about the variety/non-drama shows I watch!

Home Alone - 나 혼자 산다
Probably my favorite show on air at this moment. I know it’s not entirely true, but I feel like it has genuine quality to it that most other reality shows don’t have. I also really love seeing what other peoples houses look like. I really in love with the current host lineup, I think they all play off each other really well.

Running Man - 런닝맨
I am a long time fan of Running Man. I’ve been watching it since I started watching dramas, and will stick with it until they end the show. It has its ups and downs but I genuinely laugh out loud at every episode. I also have found that most of my non-book Korean learning is greatly contributed to this show.

Happy Together - 해피투게더
I enjoy this show, although I do like the older episodes in the sauna with some of the other hosts, but it’s still a solid show especially if you want a talk show where you can see more about idols and actors geared to an older audience.

Return of Superman - 슈퍼맨이 돌아왔다
This show I tend to skip if I don’t have time and not feel bad, but it is a cute show. The kids are adorable. This is one of my learning shows because of how much of the conversation is interactions with kids so the dialogue is easier to learn the language with.

Busted! - 범인은 바로 너
Busted! is pretty campy, but fun. It’s kind of set up to be scripted in a way that a murder mystery party you would throw would be, but still has some obvious non-scripted moments. I love Lee Kwang-soo and Yoo Jae-suk; they are both really great at variety timing and use each other to that benefit and the benefit of the show when the other less experienced characters can’t move the story along. The guest characters really make this show, and it’s a lot of fun if you are already a fan of variety/comedy shows.

Hyori’s Homestay - 효리네 민박
I’m a long time Lee Hyori fan (I’ve actually liked her/Fin.K.L since high school) so there was really no reason for me not to watch this show.

Honorable Mentions:
Men on a Mission/Knowing Brothers - 아는 형님
My Little Old Boy - 미운 우리 새끼
2 Days 1 Night - 1박 2일
Weekly Idol - 주간 아이돌

I will probably not update my variety shows list in following posts unless something changes but they can always be found on my Currently Watching page
